SunRace 11-42t 10sp Cassette, Part 3

Installed a new, longer chain, some adjustments and everything is working great!

I installed a new 10sp KMC chain and instead of removing 1 link as I normally do, I left the chain full length. Also backed out the B-tension screw until the upper jockey wheel just cleared the 42t cog of the cassette and shifting was perfect. I can shift into all 30 gear combinations and can back pedal in the small-large combination without dropping the chain.

Overall with a 42-32-20 triple up front and an 11-42 in back, I have a 802% gear ratio range from 13.2" up to 105".

Very happy with the lower gear for steep climbs. My only real complaint is the 15t - 18t jump in the high cogs. That 20% jump is right in the ratios I use a lot on the road. I'm getting used to it, but when you are at 100RPM in the 18t and then shift to the 15t, your cadence drops to 80.

I guess the only way to improve that is an 11sp cassette but that entails new mechs, new shifters, new wheel/free hub and likely a new frame. May as well get a whole new bike if replacing that many components.

For those wanting to do it with a compact crankset, It may NOT work.
I have 50/34 oval ring with road link long cage deraileur and it shifts perfectly.
HOWEVER 34/42 won't work the chainline is too steep and when you put on the power it will slip over and over again and won't work.
From a person who experimented with this.

Hi, I wanna do same replacement from 11-36T to 11-42T and keep my 3x10 speed system. So, will it work with my deore XT RD M781? I already bought cassette shimano HG500 10S.

so that extender thing makes a 36 tooth derailleur work with 42 teeth? Is that about right?

hello, but a curiosity to use the large chainring and the large pinion, do you have to add links to the chain? because I don't like it, in the video I see that it works for you.

This is just terrific, I'm going to do this with my triple as I do off-road bikepacking and really wish for such low gears.

One question I have for you, is with the 13 inch gear. Is that the lowest gear that is practical on your bike, would there ever be call to go even lower, like say a 20-46? I'm looking into doing full-loaded off-road touring on a fatbike with panniers. What would you estimate to be the lowest usable gear I could run on it? Would a 20-50 be usable on a 4-inch fatbike? That is a 11.4 inch gear.

Regarding the 800% gear range of your drivetrain, I did that math using Sheldon's gear calculator and it's telling me it's a 700% range, not 800%. Although maybe it's possible I've messed up myself somewhere along the line.
