Personally, I think if you're gonna make a game about Redwall or Narnia or Lord of the Rings, the best route to take is an open-world RPG. Customize your character, get introduced to Redwall Abbey or Cair Paravel or wherever you want to start, and then go off and explore the world. Being that so many self-contained stories take place in these worlds, what people really want is to go and see these places for themselves. Go into the Lair of Asmodeus, or walk into Mordor, or explore Telmar. Sorry if I sound like a nerd, it's because I am. I love these worlds so much that I can't help but want to walk through them.
