head to head - key differences between the SP303 & SP404sx

Hello everyone, in this video I talk you through some of the key differences between the SP303 and the SP404sx. I've had a few people ask me this in recent weeks so thought it was worth doing an upload.

One thing I forgot to mention is that the speed of the 303 is also something to consider. Its a lot slower than the 404sx in most respects such as deleting samples.

i just bought a 303 recently and i really love it. i know its limited but the sound is great!

Great job on the video, I just wanted to correct one thing about the 303 that was stated here. You are able to exchange and move sounds from pad to pad and bank to bank on the 303. Just hold down DEL and press REC, the pads with samples on them should light up and from there it works just like a 404sx. You can move sounds where ever you would like. One 303 I previously owned would not let me move sounds from banks A & B, and I had to upgrade the firmware of the device via smart media card to get it working properly. That's the only one I've ever come across though, it must have been an early model of the unit.

Cookin Soul uploaded a video using the 303 only for Dilla day. Made a beat of an O’Jays track and it was exactly like something you wouldn’t heard on Donuts. Really highlighted the awesome power and simplicity of the 303.

yo man I almost brought a 303 way back when but didn’t go through with it now I’m regretting that I did that😔 cuz that true lofi sound is brought to life with that sampler and that true dirty grittiness can’t be matched when it comes to the 303. I’m not knocking the 404sx tho cuz it has some hidden gems on it as well

Great comparison vid. Mention on the 303 sounding warmer than the 404, wonder if that has to do with the 404 no doubt being surface mount bits and the 303 being conventional (for old gear) bigger bits constructed of different rare metals.

Sp303 It has the same capabilities as the SP1200, banks and buttons but with more effects.

Just got a MC-101 and let me say if Roland continues with these updates it might be the most slept on box out here . I would say combine it with a 303 or the other SP boxes if you want but you really don't need any of the SP boxes to be honest with how powerful the MC-101 is . Just a random comment ...but I suggest you try one out I think you would love it !

Damn! That resample while recording external is exactly what I'd love for recording scratches, stick an effect on the turntable and have the beat as is.

Hey man, wondering if I could get your opinion. I am looking at trading my microkorg and korg volca sample for a sp404a in new condition. I paid about $400 total for the gear, still not sure if it is a good call to switch. Anyways, I am sure you are a bit biased, and my friend says sell my gear and buy elektron...but I would appreciate your opinion. These videos are helpful to get a look at the workflow.
