Hi sweetpeas,

Here's the first of a series of LGBT+ videos, I hope you feel in some way moved or inspired by the brave LGBT+ ambassadors who fought hard before us. I've tried to be as accurate as possible, if you fancy reading more, here are my references:
Carter, D. (2004) Stonewall: The Riots that Sparked the Gay Revolution, St Martin’s Press.
Teal, D. (1971) The Gay Militants, St Martin’s Press
Duberman, M. (1993) Stonewall, Penguin
Edsall, N. (2003) Toward Stonewall: Homosexuality and Society in the Modern Western World, University of Virginia Press

I was alive during that time (although not there when it happened). I can say you did the event justice. You clearly did your homework. You should be very proud. I'm downloading and saving this for future generations.

Well done lass,

Kate

I honestly had no idea what so ever that anything called “Stonewall” existed so thank you for this video for educating people like me who didn’t know about it and shedding a light!

Shaaba, you did a FABULOUS job compiling this history. I actually knew quite a bit of it, because I'm old. I was only 10 years at the time, very sheltered, and didn't hear about it until I was about 18 and started meeting gay people, kissing girls and learning history. The time during the mid to late 60's was when huge advances were made in human rights (in the US) for all sorts of people. But I am especially proud of those who refused to move at the Stonewall Inn, and the came back a year later to celebrate beginning of our turn. (Let me highly recommend both versions of Tales of the City on Netflix, starting with the 1993, which takes place in the 70s, and the new version, which takes place now.)

Very comprehensive with a great intro that really helps understand the whole atmosphere at the time! I’ve done a lot of my own research and I still learned a lot. Thank you! :)

One thing. I did a paper on Stonewall's effect on the movement in high school, and one thing you said stood out to be as a little too definitive and therefore inaccurate. Stonewall is seen as the beginning of most of the effective and coordinated LGBT rights movement, especially in the US. But there were organizations prior to Stonewall that were trying, they were just going about their advocacy in ways very influenced by respectability politics, and afraid of lookinng queer in any way. The two organizations I remember are The Mattachine Society (men) and The Daughters of Bilitis. Some people say, in a similar way to how Rosa Parks actually made her stand (sit) on the bus because she knew the movement was looking for a poster-person, that the organizing forces were actually waiting for another high-profile raid when Stonewall happened to galvanize new activism for LGBT rights.

Can you collab with Jessica Kellgren-Fozard? She just did a video about this as well and I think it'd be awesome to see two British people so into LGBTQ+ history!
