College has gotten to be a racket. They have manipulated the system until you can't get a job without at least 2 years college.

Most college graduates end up working in a field different from the one they studied in college. That alone should set off alarm bells and make you re-evaluate the value of college. Most of what you know about your job, you probably learned doing your job, not in school. If you are honest with yourself, you would have to admit that you have forgotten 90% or more of what you were taught in college. It is virtually worthless for most people. Employers will always value skills and experience over a college degree and will almost always make exceptions for people who can do what they need done.

I have a BS in engineering and a long life working in that or a related career. I worked hard as a carpenter and a semi truck driver during the summers and paid for my education as I went...no debt. I believe that in the "real world", employers are more interested in a persons honest ability and desire to attain a degree from a legitimate college than they are in the name of the college at the top of that diploma. In the world of the rich and famous, I feel that it's the name at the top of the diploma that's the important thing rather than the persons ability and desire to attain it. I also believe that universities are schilling out degrees that have no practical use for society and no hope for the graduate with those degrees to earn a living in that field.

I love the recent policies of Purdue. This approach is fair to all.

I didn't finish college because I ran out of money and I didn't want to put myself into debt. So I became an Electrical Designer and not an Engineer. I helped design everything you love to play with and I don't have any student debt. Just a mortgage which has more value than your piece of paper.

Trish -- I have over 3, 000 PhDs, and with Chuck Schumer in charge, I still can't get a job.... One of those sets of actual facts that I am sure most can not actually learn -- yet. There is hope.

Greetings from Germany.
I am studying politics here, just because you need some degree, when you want to become something.
Without a college degree, you are nothing here.

There are a lot of jobs that require a college degree that don’t need to and would do better with the trade school model. We would need to change certain occupational licensing requirements to allow a person with either a college degree or trade school certificate of completion to be eligible.

We should also be dismissive of people with degrees in no pay majors. We should say it’s not a real degree.

Think people misunderstand. The purpose of schools (including College), is the education of the individual. It isn't to give people jobs or careers. If going to school didn't help someone that's on the individual.
Society puts an emphasis on education because intelligent citizens makes a better society, or at least a better chance at a better society.

I can't quite agree with the sentiment here, Trish. (Respectfully) The problem, I believe, is two fold.  One is what you point out, the paper is the goal and not the learning.  The paper was supposed to be proof that the learning occurred, something the job market could trust.  This scandal erodes that trust for all graduates degrees.
But the larger problem is the systematic downgrading of blue collar work.  The attitude (prejudice) towards blue collar work in our society and school systems is appalling.  I won't go into it since Mike Rowe says it all much better.
