Presenter: Professor Bill Evans

• Students with behavioural problems present unique and overwhelming problems for teachers.
• The unmet needs of these students have significant social and economic consequences.
• Teachers and schools need an array of skills to address the needs of these students.
• Teachers already have an overwhelming job trying to meet the needs of a diverse population.
• This is a universal problem that calls for comprehensive planning.

There is an emerging body of information that suggests that the skills needed by teachers of regular and special needs children are quite similar. This presentation will examine empirically-based teaching skills and techniques and their use in regular and special education settings. Of particular importance will be how these skills are perceived by teachers and how they can be systematically built into teacher training programmes.
