Trump ally Steve Bannon to face new charges in New York

Steve Bannon, a prominent ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, is set to face a new criminal indictment in New York state court and will surrender to prosecutors on Thursday.
That's according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters.
The source said the new indictment is for state criminal charges that may mirror federal fraud charges pressed against Bannon in 2020, for which he was pardoned by Trump.
The new indictment was first reported by the Washington Post.
In a statement late on Tuesday after the Post reported the development, Bannon dismissed reports of new state charges as a political ploy, writing, "this is nothing more than a partisan political weaponization of the criminal justice system."
Two years ago federal prosecutors charged Bannon with swindling the former presidents supporters as part of an effort to solicit donations to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
The former White House strategist was accused of pocketing $1 million in the scheme.
He pleaded not guilty.
Before leaving office in early 2021, Trump issued Bannon a pardon in the federal case. But that pardon does not cover state criminal charges.
Two others charged in the federal “We Build the Wall” case pleaded guilty to fraud charges in April.
Bannon advised Trump's 2016 campaign, and later served in the administration. He was fired amid a falling out, but repaired ties with Trump and has since risen to prominence within right-wing media as a proponent of false claims that Trump's 2020 election defeat was due to fraud.
In July, Bannon was convicted of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the committee investigating last year's attack on the U.S. Capitol.
