Budget 2024: Economic Survey Expects India's GDP to Grow by 6.5-7%, Flags Jobs Concerns
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has presented the Economic Survey 2023-24 ahead of the Budget. The pre-budget document was tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Parliament. The survey, prepared by Chief Economic Advisor Nageswaran, reports an 8.2% GDP growth in the financial year 2023-24, driven by the manufacturing and construction sectors. It projects a 6.5-7% growth in the ongoing financial year 2024-25. While the survey noted India’s economy has shown resilience amid geopolitical challenges, it also questioned its approach to the manufacturing sector. The Survey said that considering the dominance of China in the industry, it may not be the most “prudent approach” for India to think it can fill the spaces left vacant by Beijing. The survey also discusses issues like inflation and unemployment. It noted that while inflation declined to 5.4% in the last financial year, food prices rose due to adverse weather. It said that unemployment fell to 3.2%, but there is a need for the country to create 78.5 lakh jobs annually until 2030.
