The way this hack works is that when Tails "dies" (aka when he would fly back on screen), you beat the level.

Who else loves the thumbnail? It looks like Tails is inhaling Sonic's spirit energy, therefore killing him. It's awesome!
Edit: The drowning music should've started playing at the 10 second mark because the timer lasts 30 seconds. Who agrees?

What I've figured out is if it triggers Tails' respawn mechanic, you win. That's the script they're using to initiate moving to the next zone, basically. This is done either by getting enough distance, or if he dies.

(7:47) Haha, nice. You weren't actually dead there, because normally you'd be able to jump out of the oil pit and use the fans to get back up. However, Tails usually sinks and dies in the oil pit, and I guess he just simply despawned very quickly as you fell there.
(8:34) Ooh, you have to play with Tails on Wing Fortress Zone as well, which is normally not possible.
(9:21) Death Egg Zone too? (9:29) So, you have to beat this boss within 30 seconds?
(10:32) And that's game!

Looks like when the game registers that you've lost Tails, you gain bonus points equal to:
Seconds remaining x 100 + Rings held x 10.
Seems rather harsh to get an instant Game Over whenever you die, though. Why not just have the player make use of their lives like usual?

Also, what happens if you're super speedy and beat a level via the normal goal within 30 seconds? (This is possible in Emerald Hill Zone Act 1 at the very least.) Does the game kill you for that, or do you just advance to the next level like normal?

And, what happens if you hit a checkpoint with at least 50 rings and enter a bonus stage (if that's still possible in this hack)?
