Ultimately, Hornby are just devaluing their own brand through poor quality at top priced goods and not working with their main retailers. My experience of buying a whole rake of 9 of their new Coronation coaches (which are an outstanding product at only 40% more than these cost per unit) was marred by the first retailer being unable to supply them despite me pre-ordering a year in advance, then the second main retailer also appears to be having the same issues. Hornby should look at where the common cause is and review their own distribution managers. As for value on these coaches a pack of 3 for 30 quid would be more appropriate. Your channel is great, it provides an accurate assessment of the product before I buy online, from overseas...

Wow, “Sam unplugged”….

Can’t argue with your findings, and couldn’t help but smile when you deployed the “largest channel” remark…

:-)

Make a tunnel with a electromagnet to turn the coaches lights on or off whenever you want by turning on the electromagnet or turning it off

Wow, the damage on that brake coach is astounding, how does that even happen? Great review Sam and as for being the largest channel in the industry, that's certainly an achievement, well done! :D

I didn't know Hornby sold coaches in kit-form!

Another excellent analysis. I got two of them, plus a four wheel version, before I saw this video. I don't have any issues with the rolling characteristics, and mine, I forget which railway, not Southern, are nicely painted. More importantly, they traverse the minimum radius switches without falling off, which is really appreciated, what with third axle, and all. As far as detail goes, to me they are light years beyond the vintage two axle units that was pretty much all I knew about, in the States. One last thing, is that as far as I know, Hornby ships free to the U.S.A. for orders $70 and up, when purchased directly. This saves a small fortune.

Don’t understand the thumbs down, it needs a real debate from Us the purchasers, And no excuse yet again why should we accept this sort of paying top money for sub standard products, ? To me and can’t/won’t see anyone just saying standing up and saying don’t buy it. On a personal note have just unsubscribed to one of the major suppliers as not wanting to any further updates as just seen new releases, almost A £100 for a carriage!, Ho come one! Can’t wait to see any reviews, thankfully we have this channel to take a full real honest overview think amount of followers says it all .

Well, I think It would have been great with your bachmann Emily, since her coaches are also 6 wheeled...
and also because you don't have her coches yet 😂

Amazing video as always! ;)

I’m going to play Devil’s advocate a bit here with regards to the lighting - I actually significantly prefer Hornby’s solution. If you’re a DCC modeller I can see the advantages of the Genesis lights, but as someone who runs exclusively on DC it’s nice to have lights that don’t unrealistically get brighter as the train speeds up. I haven’t had any batteries need replacing yet, but they’re easy to access IMO. So I think for more casual modelling it does have its advantages.

I agree on the point about controlling your lights from the controller, at least for fully realistic operation - the only way I can think to do it with these is to hook up a switchable magnet to a solenoid and hide that somewhere, which would probably be impractically complex.

I used to be a big Hornby fan but their commitment to their customers is appalling. I thought your score was very generous I was expecting a 3 or 4 at the most. Hornby need to get their act together

Sam, your 3D printed coaches came more assembled of the printer bed than the Hornby coaches out of the box. Great video.

My coaches have catastrophic amounts of resistance going round corners. With an 0-4-0 you can only pull 1 of these. 2 is just not going to happen. You can hear them grinding round every curve.

I’ve got 4 sets of these and none of them were damaged, also when I was weathering a set of mine the bodies were a struggle to get off until I got used to it, so yours were either mishandled at shop level or were dropkicked by your postie!
Shall see how many parts fall off of hattons versions when they arrive

I purchased a quartet of these coaches in BR red from a good Canadian dealer in Ontario. All four arrived without any damage. I oiled the axles, replaced the tension lock couplings with Kadee #18 couplings, and run them behind my Hornby Terrier (which I installed DCC and sound). They may not be the most beautiful coaches, but for my purposes (running cute English trains) they do just fine.

Dear Sam: Sorry I am back again. Great video, great review. These are not toys, they are toys that have now matured into intricate models, as such and with reference to the price, we should expect quality relevant to the price involved. You alarmingly, with excellent analysis frequently expose shortcomings in the quality to price ratio.
I cannot think of another situation where you are expected to tolerate buying what has now become an investment and be expected to correct damaged and shoddy articles.

When I was aged about 12 (when the dinosaurs roamed) I took a plastic kit of a flat bed truck, shortened it, and converted it to a GW shunter's wagon, fitted with Jackson metal wheels and axle end bearings, all aligned by MK1 eyeball and hand, that was more free running than this and cost pennies.

I got the BR ones a brake no lights and a 5 bay 3rd class coach with lights, rolling wise ok but light bleed it makes the sides glow a bit ok not as bad as their Mk3 dvt but a bit annoying as for the lights I’d rather buy the unlit one it’s good but could be better I was lucky and got mine brand new via that auction site, as for the damage I’ve had a few items from hattons busted like that they blamed Royal Mail until I said I work for them, great review Sam but I won’t be getting anymore than the two I have I’m happy with them but that’s it, cheers 😊👍🏻

It looks to me as if Hornby have simply upgraded their old Annie and Clarabelle coaches from the Thomas range rather than starting from scratch. It's a pity they keep jumping in to stifle the competition rather than making something more original.
