Sarah Lidstone, MD, PhD, Toronto Western Hospital and the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, outlines how diagnoses are made in functional movement disorder (FMD). As is standard for neurological diseases, diagnosis begins identification of features that suggest FMD in the patient’s history, as well as a physical exam. Dr Lidstone highlights the importance of the clinician thinking about FMD and keeping the signs that could rule FMD in as a diagnosis in mind. One common sign of a functional disorder is change in symptoms in different situations. This is then followed by other tests, including MRI and EEG, to determine if there are comorbidities present.
