In case anyone doesn’t know, this is a well known trap, not something someone’s friend just happened to play.

If he realized before taking the black queen, he should have not taken it. Trading queens always favors the player whose ahead unless there is checkmate potential.

I played this trap on accident and thought i blundered my queen, but luckily found that check

This happens pretty often in bullet chess.

I didn't interpret him saying "my friend played..." as his friend invented. I interpreted it as he doesn't know chess well enough to name it, so explaining it does it enough justice.

The issue though, is when he says the name of the trap, he says it nonchalantly. "Queens Gambit denied trap" will help you find out more about this well known trap.

I saw this in a book somewhere, and just a few days later I played a game in which my opponent fell right into it. Good times.

Actually no need to rush recapturing the queen. You can improve your position significantly with Kxd8 first if e4 you play Re8. They have to play f3 to protect the pawn, f5 can be played e5 Nb6. And if the queen ever takes you just recapture and you’re crushing it.
