My interpretation is that the point is "not everyone needs to sell their art/creatives shouldn't feel the need to do so and it can be harmful to do so, " but people took it as an opinion rather than an observation or insight. Idk i may be phrasing poorly

Your advice was pretty solid. The trend lately seems to be to pressure creatives into monetizing their hobbies/passions. It's a great way to kill those passions - especially if the frustrations and lack of freedom selling handmade work isn't considered.
I blame hustle culture.

Lots of people I know who are creative started selling g their art and then changed back to keeping it as a hobby. The pressures once you start selling can really ruin the whole experience for some people. Creating without the pressure of sales and customers is great advice.

As an artist who profits from art, whenever I hear this take I'm like "oh no that's 100% correct" - it's sometimes not the world we live in, and money can be a part of it, but if you don't have to have it be a part of your art... DO NOT.

my take on the previous vid was the notion that not everything NEEDS to be a side hustle. like, if u rly want to sell your art, go ahead, but she is RIGHT in saying that making art for it to be commercial or even just for other people's enjoyment does change it (imo)

The "what about me" and the "you like this SO you hate that" combined is really becoming a supervillain

it’s ironic that the person said "let people do what they want" can't take their own advice. god forbid someone expresses an opinion or shares their experience online. i loved the original video because it resonated with me so much. as soon as i started taking commissions for digital art, it was stressful, made me feel unhappy about my art, and made me burn out real fast. the amount of times i've talked about a hobby like baking or fiber art, people immediately jump on me telling me to open an etsy store or take commissions, but the point of a hobby for me is that it's something i do to relax. this applies to posting online, too. i don't post my art anymore because i was tired of worrying whether i'll get popular or get likes. my sister who graduated with a fine arts degree found herself in very much the same experience. i think it's important for kids to learn how to make art for themselves first, because that's where you find the passion and the joy. hustle culture isn't for everyone.

This take is so valid though. Turning your passion into your job is a double edged sword. The saying is if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life, but you’re not going to love every part of your dream job 100% of the time, like you may love creating but do you also love marketing yourself and networking? You put a lot of pressure on yourself when you turn your hobby into your sole source of income. It’s no longer something you do because you enjoy it, now it’s something you have to do so you can afford to eat and pay rent 😬

Your advice was excellent. When you're learning, gaining skills and confidence, it's so important to have the space to find your voice.

Like they say on tumblr, this is the piss poor comprehension website - to which we always get the reply "how dare you say we piss on the poor"

It’s wild how controversial it is for you to want your students to get to explore their creativity without being confined by capitalist gains. Even if they want to eventually make money off ceramics, if they don’t take the time to experiment, grow their skills, and develop their own style, they’re greatly limiting their chances of success. Part of your role as a teacher is to speak from your experience working in the industry

“Isn’t money the point?” No? It’s not. The point is a cool pot at the end.

I for one really appreciated the reminder to create for ourselves first. 🥰 Hours after you posted it, I showed a friend something I made and was so happy to finally finish after having to put it on the sidelines for 3 years. They said it looked great and I should sell them. They even offered to write a listing for me. With your reminder fresh in my mind, I was able to quickly reply, no thanks, this one is for me and I’m not interested in selling these at this time.

You keep being you and this video was a great reply!😊
