Honestly, being able to create any random portal almost instantly is an insane power. You can redirect and even partially neutralize any enemy and attack which approaches you. The only way to counter is is to either attack from too many directions at once or being able to remotely create an effrct inside the enemies body, by means of magic for example.

It's literally experience. Magic is a purely mental power, enforcing your will upon reality. Being able to use it is also all about the belief that you can as well.
Meaning, all the hand signs, the waving and whatnot is not at all necessary to use magic, but it serves as a crutch to convince the body "I'm doing magic" which causes the mind to follow more easily.

So yeah, it's just an experience thing. Or Wong just used a magic item to have someone open the portal for him on the other side. Or a magic item to open the portal directly.
