Whetstone Park is a secluded getaway to escape city life in #Columbus #Ohio, USA and experience #nature. A stream winds through a ravine with some popular hiking trails. Eventually the stream goes through a hidden underground tunnel. Judging by the graffiti, it's a popular urban exploration #urbex area. Join me on today's adventure as I explore Whetstone Park and the Whetstone tunnel.

Thanks for posting this, i grew up in Clintonville not far from the park, and even as a small child my mother would take me to the upper parts of the ravine, east of High Street. Back then there were several places along the roadway where you could park your car, and then I'd play in the stream bed. In this upper part of the ravine are several old man made concrete structures, which may date back to the 1930s or 40s, which look like they were designed to hold back the water and create ponds.

When i was around 12, two friends and i attempted to go through the tunnel, from the east side towards the west. I chickened out right around where that water was pouring in. My father, a longtime Columbus resident, told me that the oldest part of that tunnel was only as long as High Street is wide, and the squared off parts were built much later so that the land above could be used to construct the small office buildings that are above.

During a particularly bad evening thunderstorm event in October 1980, the water apparently was too much for that tunnel to carry, and the water backed up and rose to the point that it overtopped High Street, leaving mud high up in the trees on the east side of the tunnel. The lower level of the building on the east side of High Street was flooded, as it had windows overlooking the ravine. The power of water can be truly scary. During this same storm several of the vehicular bridges in the eastern part of the ravine were washed away.

As kids we frequently visited Whetstone Park, and never missed the July Fourth fireworks display there. We started going to the fireworks before i was even born, walking to the park from our house on Glenmont Avenue, just to the south of the eastern ravine. There are many unique homes tucked away in the hills and valleys of the eastern ravine, which we always called Overbrook, after the name of the main road that runs through the valley.

The ravine starts out a mile or so east of Interstate 71, near Karl Road, and another small stream meets up with it just south of Dominion Junior High, and yet another even smaller ravine comes in from the south, where it runs behind the houses on the west side of Yaronia Drive. There are many nice 1950s ranch style homes along these two smaller ravines, some completely hidden from the road.

Those concrete cylinders at the start of the video could be wells, considering the topology of the area being next to a stream the phreatic table being high around there would be a good area to take advantage of the table, there’s a chance it could also be a CSO regulator which dumps into that creak.
The box shapes of the tunnel are top halves of cellular precast box culverts placed on trapezoidal canals etc

There they are now. Thanks for putting the links up. Thanks for this perspective of Columbus! I would never have seen it otherwise.

The big cement round objects are water cisterns. It’s amazing how grown up it’s become. It’s been about 25 years since I was there! Great video Rob! 💜☮️ #ProudFanGirl69

Love how informative your videos are. If you like this stuff, you should check out my friends channel at Halifax to Hollywood. He does a lot of abandoned and tunnel exploring too! His site is also linked on my channel if that's easier to find as well.
