National Conservation Commission of Barbados’ vision is to advance a sustainable development program underpinned by leading edge environment policies, practices and programs that protect all aspects of our environment, our water resources, quality of life and the holistic well-being of our citizens.
Carlos Gilkes is the Technical Officer of the National Conservation Commission. He has worked there since 1994, in various roles which include Lifeguard, Naturalist, and Boat Operator, giving him a well-rounded and well-informed perspective before ascending to his current role as Technical Officer in 2019. Carlos specializes in the management of protected areas, specifically Folkestone Marine Reserve, the only marine protected area in Barbados. Carlos will speak on the many sides of beach management, including beach maintenance, beach risk analysis, beach carrying capacity, beach stability mapping, and communication planning.
