Earth Leakage Trip...Here's what to do. (RCD)

This is a short video to show you what to do when the Earth leakage in your house trips.

This could safe you some money as I get called out allot only to find that it is an appliance or lead that is causing the earth leakage to trip.

Step 1: Remove all plugs and adapters from sockets.
Step 2: Try and find one breaker that's causing the earth leakage tripping
Step 3: Remove the wires from the earth leakage unit to test that it's working like it should.
Step 4: Remove the neutral wire one at a time and test after each wire is removed.

This will narrow down the particular circuit causing the tripping.

Electricity is dangerous. BE VERY CAREFUL

Not all countries have earth leakages. Some are still using fuses which South Africa moved away from some 30years+ ago.

I am in the UK but of course much of this is similar, a first place to look for an earth leakage problem tends to be things where water is involved and of course the effects are cumulative. Our RCD on the sockets tripped late at night a week or so ago, the base for the cordless kettle had water spilt on it. Another problem area has been outdoor stuff where the waterproof enclosures have not been closed properly.... they have their own RCDs but usually trip the main one first...

A very pragmatic way of fault finding, I am an electrician and am going faulkt finding tomorrow at a client's, I always find it helpful to look at other people's problems because you often get ideas, it is all too easy to get tunnel visioned into looking for a fault. Thank you great video.

Thanks mate, your comment about "outside lights" triggered me - I have a GPO on the back porch and after narrowing it down I find it's the fridge tripping the breaker after yesterday's huge storm. Eureka!

Cheers man, I followed your suggestion for knocking everything off, unplugging and checking it one by one, to find the Soup Maker was the culprit. And the most I've ever done with electricity before is change a bulb! Good work x

For the earth to live fault or some problem it can be done easily by switching the fuses one by one but for the earth to neutral fault it does work with this method, you will have to open the board and test between the Neutral and earth of each circuit. In the case of neutral to earth, only disconnect the neutral from each circuit and test it with the entire earth bar. No need to disconnect the earth for each circuit.
