It is the job of these fragrance companies to macerate or age these fragrances before they hit store counters for consumer use. When I buy a cologne I like I want to use it right away, not put it away for two months. Makes no sense. Just like when you buy a bottle of scotch. You expect it to be already aged and ready for consumption. These fragrance companies are not only not doing their job properly, but they are also ruining fragrances with all this Reformulation and constantly watering down to cut costs and the consumers get the short end of the stick. They don’t even have the decency of putting a note on their products stating that it has been Reformulated. Very sneaky. I am glad that I stopped buying fragrances a while back. I refuse to be ripped off by these shady companies

I have had a bottle of Dolce and gabbana Por homme since 2016, and when I spray that juice now, man, oh man! The juice got richer, deeper, and stronger. It's aging like fine wine. 😊

Fragrances smell better and get stronger as they macerate

I've noticed that some fragrances are weaker with first sprays. I bought layton and it lasted 3 hours on my skin, after few months it lasted 10 hours. I think that the air have come into the bottle and the maceration process has continued in the bottle. Have you ever experienced something like that? Have a nice day ;)

Just complementing what was said in the video, the maceration process continues throughout the use of the perfume, as the liquid comes out of the bottle and the oxygen comes in...
It's kind of a constant process. Some perfumes even "spoil". And the greater the amount of oxygen, the faster and more intense the maceration...

I just got Club De Nuit Untold today (it's from a Dec. 2023 batch) and I sprayed it, and while I can tell it has some very good notes, and will probably smell amazing once it's macerated.. right now it has a gasoline-y smell. So I'm really looking forward to spraying it again in a few weeks and see how it smells then! ❤

Question: can I use sometimes a perfume during the maceration period? Or this will stop/break the maceration?

I think this is why my small test bottle smelled so much better than the big bottle of Eros EDT i ordered :/ i hope it gets better

For shure the maceration (maturation) is reality, concerning everything related with oils and alcohols with anykind level with oxygen.

Men’s fragrances are like bottles of fine wine…when first bottled, they don’t smell as nice as they do 6 months or more later. Like fine wines, they take a bit of time to “age”. I have had this experience with my favorite men’s fragrance, Antaeus Pour Homme. A new bottle smells sharp, even a bit citrusy. After several months, even years, it takes on a deep, masculine dark scent that is absolutely sublime.

While I think the explanation here mostly defines maceration, up to a point, it appears to be generally confused with maturation, as evident in the comments. Maceration is the extraction of essential oils from raw materials. Maturation is the time-bound process of letting your bottle sit. Maceration happens before your perfume enters its bottle. Maturation can happen before, too, depending on how long the perfumer wishes to have it "Mature" to achieve a particular result, but it can also happen after bottling. Many fragrances go through a short process, with the understanding that there will be an additional period of time passing as it sits in a warehouse, shipping, placed on sales floor, etc.

I've heard that Armani Code Absolu has great projection. I got one and it is literally a skin scent after 15 minutes... i hope the maceration will help, because this is just sad. And it was pretty expensive.

People say that fragrances from The Dua Brand are made-to-order or not too far from it. Is that why the Dua scents I recently got have poor longevity even though they are at the "extrait de parfum" concentration level? Is their longevity likely to improve dramatically after the bottles are left alone in a dark drawer for a few weeks?

Im not perfume specialist, I'm not a pro, but I make perfume and I sell perfume, it makes sense we have to age it otherwise there'll be sedimentation on the perfume bottle, idk why I have done filtration but still it will be sediment after a week,
So I tried to mix properly and wait for at least a month before I pour it into a smaller perfume bottle

Very interesting.

My March 2022 bottle (2 months or so old) of Hawas has hardly any scent and no longevity or projection, yet it is talked of as being a beast mode performing fragrance

Is Maceration something that happens more so with niche frags than designers? People told me my Creeds will get better over time (I just started buying em). Apparently Aventus gets a lot better over time, from what people have told me....even though it's a 20M01 batch.

i noticed if i fill the fragrance up in atomizers they macerate faster.. u can smell right away after 1-2 days... i thinks its because there is more surface for a less amount of liquid..u should also mention there are a ton of scent wich go bad after years... no fragrance last forever... sure they still smell, but some notes might be gone and u dont even notice ...

I have heard from perfumers that after a few years fragrances starts oxidation and even tho people think it has "macerated" and gotten better, a perfumer nose will know that the fragrance is going bad. I am no perfumer so I know shit, Im just learning and getting into the hobby.
