For those of you who’ve never seen a hump yard in action, this video was sped up. Generally, the cars go no faster than 5 or 10 mph down the hill.

Which has lead to one of the greatest stencils ever put on a rail car
"DO NOT HUMP WHEN LOADED"
Truer words have never been spoken.

My dad built the largest hump yard of the time in west colton California
Glad you are educating your followers
If I’m not mistaken his crew built all of the retarders in the yard and they had a huge turn around loop
It was originally southern pacific and now Union Pacific and most of the traffic was over cajon pass
Well done!!

In the UK they are called Marshalling yards. And worked very similarly until the 1980s, when container and bulk freight took over. Many wagons used to say 'No hump shunting' or 'no loose shunting' to protect their loads.

For years I lived close to a yard just like this in Fremont New York. I’d watch for hours. I’d tell my parents I was watching train cars hump. 😂. Con-rail was big then.

At night in the winter when it’s snowing the cars creep along and don’t make a sound. The low boys are the ones that get you because you are always kinda looking up. Those slow moving flat cars will just roll you up.

My dad is a retired engineer from Conrail. He pushed cars over the hump for over 40+ yrs. A lot of great memories

Great video. I was an engineer and worked a few hump yards. It's boring work. As the engineer you have to regulate the speed of cars which usually number over 100 cars to 4 mph.

I remember this kinda rail yard from Mighty Machines when i was just a little guy!

All i remember was a locomotive voiced by a woman talking about how she likes chocolate ice cream box cars lmao

Pasco Washington has one, my Aunt Patsy worked for Great Northern, Burlington back in the day, retired early two thousand, she was the sub for putting out orders for each train that passed by each station. She traveled a lot and I would go with her and watch her. Each stay lasted a vacation time one or two weeks, it was a blast! 60’s and early 70’s before computers took over. Eventually she got stationed at home in Spokane.

This is so awesome to see and know about now when i see it. I see many many railways and swap yards so this is cool to know if i ever see it done now.

All ours are long gone in UK. One yard became a forest after being last used over 30 years ago. Being fully electrified it became a huge garden! Humps are allegedly History
