You can see that in games that are optimized for many threads the FX can pull ahead significantly. Also the Athlon struggles with texture/asset streaming sometimes (AC Origins). The FX still does a respectable job.

Remember in 2012 when the 2500k was miles ahead of the 8350 and the 2600k and 2500k were = and the i3 2100 equalled the 8350? The athlon is faster than a 2100.

Core optimisation has allowed the fx 8350 to keep alive. And pulled the 2600k well ahead of the 2500k in 2019

The 8350 may be outdated but even choosing the cheapest parts on the newest platform is still costing you more than the am3+ platform where you have ddr3 which is half the price of ddr4 and motherboards half the price of their am4 counterparts as well as an 8 core cpu(Dont bark that games only use 2 to 4 cores crap because why else would modern consoles run 8 core chips? Games are using more cores as physics modules and game engines become more complex)for less than a hundred bucks. Newer isnt always better when you've got tight budgets to uphold and it isnt worth cutting performance just for the idea of "brand new pc". The only thing you really HAVE to have new is a gpu because they evolve with each generation and become more convenient and feature-ful(if that's a word). But Yeah. The 8350 is a very competent cpu and will run (almost)any game out there at playable framerates when paired with a capable gpu.
