Mary Austin Gives Emotional New Interview to Explain Why She's Selling Freddie Mercury's Belongings

A collection of 1,500 items owned by Freddie Mercury, including stage costumes and handwritten lyrics are to be sold by Mary Austin. In a rare new interview, she unveils why she is going to sell these.

Speaking with the BBC, Mary said of Freddie’s private collection: “You see the spectrum of his taste. It's a very intelligent, sophisticated collection…I miss the fun, the humour, his warmth, his energy."

Then she explained why she is selling his private collection
“I've decided to sell because, I need to put my affairs in order and in order to do that I've found that I needed to sell Freddie's collection in my lifetime. The only things I am keeping, his personal gifts that he gave me. I decided that it wouldn't be appropriate for me to keep things back. If I was going to sell, I had to be brave and sell the lot.”

She also revealed that the most difficult thing to part with is his written lyrics. About the written lyrics she said "for me, most beautiful side. You're looking at the process of the artist. The crossings out, the rethinking, the reformatting. It's just reflection of Freddie”

Mary admits that while it's been over 30 years since his death, she still misses him deeply:

Mercury once said of Austin: "I don't have that many people to turn to. And the only one, if we're talking about it, is Mary."

Mary has never betrayed Freddie, never written a book about their wonderful relationship and NEVER told anyone where Freddie's ashes are - she respected Freddie's privacy and she knew what he wanted more than anyone else in the world. As she said - she never betrayed Freddie during his lifetime - and she would never betray him now. She has nothing to explain. It's her choice. She loved the private Freddie Mercury. Should the Queen Management buy the relevant pieces, although that only pushes the problem backwards. I wish a place could have been created that would honor Freddie the people that love him could visit and learn more about his life and music and pay their respects. Since their is no special place fans can really pay their respects and that honors Freddie I would have loved to have seen it rather than his beautiful personal items going to private people. There will never be another Freddie Mercury nor will there ever be anyone who surpasses him as an artist for me and other fans of Queen. I don't wish to criticize anyone, especially since Freddie trusted Mary with his beautiful home and personal items and if Mary believes Freddie would have wanted his privacy preserved, I respect that. By all means Freddie had every right and if it was his wishes, I support him completely. The world lost a beautiful person and an incredible artist when we lost Freddie. I will always miss him. When I first heard of this, I was upset. After thinking about it and hearing her reasoning - she is doing the right thing. Also, she is donating portions of the profit to Mercury Trust and Elton John’s Aids Charities. She can't take it all with her. I completely understand. I'm 53 and try to keep what I own to a minimum (what I truly enjoy) because someday I will no longer exist. Plus she was loyal to Freddie. Showing much dignity in the last three decades.
