I'm not sure I agree with this and share my thoughts on the subject here. As someone who has struggled financially in the past, I feel obligated to share my perspective on this article and the advice given by Suze Orman.

I believe Suze's advice was for someone with a low income who asked her for advice because they were struggling to get an emergency fund going. Her advice was valid. I'm sure Suze has an emergency fund and built it up the same exact way while she was a waitress and as she made more money she was able to put away more money into her emergency fund. The key is building good money habits and simply getting an emergency fund started. As you make more, you can save more. The examples you gave (flat tire, etc.) are exactly what emergency fund money is for. It keeps you from having to go into debt using a credit card or simply being unable to pay for what you need.
