For all those in the comments stating all ferrets smell and that somehow the entire rescue staff is nose-blind or lying. No.

The grand majority of ferrets in the United States are produced by Marshall Farms. That company de-scents ferrets and the only time they smell is due to adrenal or poor skin management from over-washing as stated. As a rescue we currently have 56 ferrets and every one of them is a Marshalls Farms ferret. They are overwhelmingly common in the US and the only ones you will find in any pet store.

Cleaning their boxes twice a day as we do and ensuring their environment is clean cuts out any of the urine or poop smell that is the standard with ferrets. If yours smells like this then you're not cleaning their environment as regularly as you should be. The only time we ever bathe them is in oat milk to ensure their oils remain intact. Even then this is only done when they dive into soup or cover themselves in poop which is rare at best. Oat milk stops the oils from being stripped and keeps them from having an overproduction of oil that leads to more smelliness.

Some people can smell when ferrets have bad adrenal disease. This can smell like hot garbage and is very obvious to those that can. Other than that they smell like any other normal pet and only when you're very close to them. If you have a ferret in the US with a strong odor take it to your exotics vet. There is a very good chance it is a Marshalls ferret and that smell may indicate adrenal disease.

Leaving rude ass comments doesn't change this.

How do ferrets smell?

With their noses, of course.

I have never been to a house with ferrets that didn't smell like death.

They absolutely have an odour to them. They stink less when they’re spayed or neutered. Don’t bathe them if possible is correct.

“How do they smell, they actually don’t”. Bro just torched all his credibility.

I used to work with ferrets when I worked at the pet store, and the only time they ever stank was when we had a TON of them at once, since their tank was so small (we had like 8 at once, once- they werent very old, so maybe half of full size, but thats still a lot of ferrets!) or when their tank needed cleaned. When it was 1 or 2? They just smelled a little bit milky/sweet. They were all neutered/spayed and descented by the breeder.
Though, it did lowkey turn me off of owning them because they are SO cute and playful and affectionate, but theyre as energetic and playful as puppies/kittens and I cannot imagine having a kitten that stays a kitten for up to 15 years- i can handle puppies/kittens in small doses and adore them, but owning them is exhausting 😭

Pov: a man who has lost his sense of smell of normal, active ferrets

This is like the dudes who always reek of weed but argue "I have a routine that makes it so NOBODY will notice the smell"

They actually do, your just nose blind to them after a few weeks. Trust when I say your guests can smell them.

I had a ferret as a kid, and she wasnt stinky at all, as long as i kept her cage clean and let her run around my room

Trust us thor, they do smell. You've just gone nose blind to em cuz your around em all the time. My sister said the same thing when she had some and as soon as I walked into the house I was hit with ferret stank. I think we go nose blind to it really quickly tho. I had to babysit em for about a week once and by the end of the week I didnt notice it when I opened the door

Ferrets have a very distinct ferret smell. Deglanded or not (which I would never degland) you can walk into any house and if they have ferrets and you know the ferrets smell you will be able to tell within moments. Edit: just so you all know I love ferrets

I’ve met many ferrets who were never bathed and in impeccable health and they still smelled exactly like ferrets.

"They go bald and die" 😂were not so different after all

I can confirm as an animal breeder. Ferrets are some of the least wanted pets because of the smell. Plus their poop also smells horrible, and they treat your fingers and toes as if they're hot dogs cooked to perfection.

Idk man. If you have a dozen of any animal, your house is going to smell a certain way.

"They actually don't"

That's a bold face lie. Even without washing them they have a very particular smell that will transfer to your hands. They don't smell bad enough to stink up a room though.

But i guess when you live with 20+ ferrets you probably just don't notice it after a while 😂

I had a roommate with 8 ferrets and I can confirm they smelled awful, but she confined the smell to her room by keeping them in there most of the time. There were some times when they crawled out from under the door
and peed on things stinking up the rest of the apartment and that's when I realized she was just so used to them she couldn't smell them anymore cus she couldn't smell that was happening. I never saw her give them baths a single time in the 3 years she lived with us either.

Thor's place probably smells like ferret and he is just so used to it so it doesn't smell bad to him anymore.
