There was also a pictorial band book called "Encyclopedia Metallica" (Eddie Van Halen on the cover) that Ron Quintana was very fond of, where he got the name idea. Apparently Ron also originally coined the phrase Thrash Metal!

There was a hard rock/metal encyclopedia that came out in 1980 or '81 titled Encyclopedia Metallica (a play on the Encyclopedia Britannica) - that's obviously where Ron got that word from. I remember seeing it advertised in rock magazines and I really wanted it, but I couldn't find it at a bookstore so I bought one called Heavy Metal A to Z instead.

Metal mania was the better choice for a magazine

I remember very well there was an interview with Lars, James and James. And James said the name came from their 2 favorite things Metal and Vodka. Now I'm going to spend so much time finding that

The name came from a Book. Everyone knows that Lars took the name, but not many know it originally came from a book called De re metallica from 1556

Um, I seem to remember back in 82 or 83 in the back of rock magazines, there being ads for something called the encyclopedia metallica. This was before I ever saw a Metallica record in stores. Infact, that's where I always thought they got their name from.
Edit: yep it seems the book Encyclopedia Metallica was first published in 1980. Hey, maybe the author should sue Metallica for copyright infringement or some royalties.

This is an example of musicians being cool and groovy by saying "Take it, with my blessing!"
