I appreciate that you were really respectful about the whole spaghetti part lol It's been my comfort food even well into my adulthood
Fun fact: the reason why Filipino spaghetti is sweet is because in WWII there was a tomato shortage in the Philippines, so they substituted tomato-based products with a banana sauce consisting of mashed bananas, vinegar, spices, and red dye.

This is mega nice!

Also, the reason why Philippine spaghetti is sweeter than usual is that post-WW2, there weren't any tomatoes around so they made a ketchup substitute with bananas

Papa JW, one thing you need to know is that in the Philippines, the sauce we put in our spaghetti contains Banana Catsup. This is what gives it the sweet, tangy flavour, hence we don't need to add a lot of sugar to it. Also, some Filipino Mums add milk powder or evaporated milk in their sauces, hence adding another dimension to it. It's great you tried, and yes, hats off to you bud.

As an apprentice chef, I understand your aversion to not making it in the traditional italian pomodoro/napoli sauce, but thank you for still trying. Jollibee is a childhood staple and classic.

That sweet spaghetti is definitely hated by a lot of non Filipinos. But we grow up with it. Most say they tasted it when they were a child and call the spaghetti for the “poor” but in the Philippines and to us Filipinos it’s our childhood and we grew up with this amazing food.

So, as an American that has spent roughly 3 years in the Philippines, sweet spaghetti is definitely something we have to get used to. It’s not bad, it’s just different. I was taken aback the first time, but as time went on, I grew to enjoy it.
The fried chicken stomps all other places though. And he didn’t even get the mango peach pie or the pancit palabok! And while the palabok at Jollibee isn’t homemade quality, it hits the spot

The Filipino spaghetti is an acquired taste. I remember growing up only tasting this kind of spaghetti. When I first tried itallian spaghetti for the first time, it surprised me how different it was and personally didn't like it, I was 8. Overtime tho I grew to like it too.

I’ve come to accept that not all will like/enjoy Jollibee’s sweet spaghetti, everyone has different palettes and flavor profiling, but the fact that Josh gives Jollibee its praise, papa has my approval

I can't honestly blame non-Filipinos for not liking Filipino Spaghetti. It's really an acquired taste. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind if Joshua said that he hated it because I understand why; but he really went out of his way to be extra respectful with it and I respect that.

For non-Filipinos who might be wondering how one can like the absurdity of a very sweet spaghetti, just think of having it as your introduction to spaghetti as a kid without knowing about the traditional style. I bet that you'll love it as well. I even think that most Filipinos haven't had a taste of the traditional spaghetti and I guarantee you as well that most of them won't like it when they try it. It's also not like we like everything to be extra sweet over here, it's just a culture thing. That's all that there is to it.

As an American who has spent a lot of time in Philippines, I consumed many a meal at Jollibee. I also explored other Filipino cuisine, including balut. The chicken is awesome. Yes, the spaghetti is different, but you treated this challenge with respect. Judging from the feedback here, you also summoned the “Pinoy Pride” we know so well. Salamat

Jollibee is pretty much a large part of an average Filipino's childhood. So our attachment to it is pretty strong even way into our adulthood. Also, I've never smelled a fried chicken as fragrant as the chickenjoy. You can smell it from like a mile away 😁 that's how you'd know there's a Jolllibee nearby.

I'm not the slightest bit Filipino, but seeing as fried chicken and spaghetti are two of my favorite comfort foods, I think I've discovered my dream restaurant!

I think the main reason your spaghetti failed against the Jollibee Jolly Spaghetti is because they use banana sauce or banana ketchup instead of tomato sauce. I personally love the sweet Filipino style spaghetti. When I was living on the west side of O'ahu there was a point that I was going to the Ka Makana Ali'i Jollibee almost every day for the Jolly Hotdog and Jolly Spaghetti.

As I'd read the comments, Filipino style spaghetti is an unorthodox style, but we way like our pasta that way. Kudos for that.
As for your approach to our fried breaded chicken, it's a culinary upgrade if Jollibee would consider.
Not to mention, he asked a Filipino to rate both meals, and staying true to his Filipino roots.
Overall, it's nice that "for the first time in your BUT BETTER series" your team came up with a stalemate, against your restaurants in the US.

As a Filipino who lives in the Philippines, I’m honestly just watching to see if I can make the Jollibee chicken at home and I’m grateful for Joshua by helping me realize how much better it is than other fastfood brands today 🥰

When you’ve been eating it since your childhood, you definitely get used to it. So it’s understandable why those who are new to tasting the spaghetti are a bit weirded out. But to us, banana ketchup is a staple to a perfect Filipino spag recipe. It’s used in so many dishes, especially the ✨holy trinity✨
