New item the orb of pondering,
When a creature sees this orb they must make a DC 10 wisdom saving throw or have its mind domonated by the orb of pondering. A creature that has been put under the control of an orb of pondering can not look away, can not leave the orbs presence, and will not even blink. The effect ends when the orb of pondering is out of sight.

Put this video on a tv or monitor, and make the players stare at the screen if they fail. Wait till they try and use it as an op item and accidentally all starve to death watching the orb.

In my homebrew world, orb pondering is a controversial practice. The potentially infinite secrets within are enough to drive lesser minds to the brink of madness. Whole lives have been ruined in the pursuit of deeper understanding of damn things.

Stop and speak to the poor destitute on the street and he'll spin you a yarn about how once he was an up and coming student at the Royal Academy. With grand plans for his future career in the distant house of a foreign noble man. But how the chance to study an orb resulted in his tragic downfall.

Druids and Clerics know of the dangers of orbs and actively advocate for nations to regulate if not out right ban the practice of orb pondering. But the innovations in magic derived for the orbs is to valuable to forgo.

To begin orb pondering the ponderer must make an intelligence check and can add their arcana proficiency to the score. While pondering the player may roll 1d20 to obtain a random positive effect (up to the dm), such as a temporary increase to skills or specific ability scores. Pondering deeper increases the number of d20 rolls by one but each requires another intelligence check. Failing any of these checks will result in a negative effect determined by a d20 roll (specifics determined by the dm) Also while pondering the player must make either a constitution or charisma saving throw, failing the former will result in one level of exhaustion, failing the latter will result in a reduction in charisma and the players will admit an unpleasant oder. The player may make a charisma check to attempt to input their own secrets into the orb.
Finally to look away from the orb the player must make a wisdom roll but the roll must be equal to or higher to the last int check to succeed.
Lastly if a player destroys an orb they gain the Orb Breaker Feat. All future orbs resist the players pondering and all orb ponders will immediately become paranoid of the player on sight.
