Welcome, my name is Phil, and in this video I discuss how binary stars form.

A system of two stars that are in orbit around one another and gravitationally connected to one another is known as a binary star system. Although the possibility of some binaries forming by gravitational capture between two single stars does exist, the high number of binaries that currently exist means that this cannot be the main formation process. The idea that binaries originate during star formation is supported by the discovery of binaries made up of stars that are not yet on the main sequence. The creation of a binary or multiple star system can be explained by the fragmentation of the molecular cloud and circumstellar disc during the protostar's formation.

lets say you have a relatively uniform distribution of gas. What would cause the gas to nucleate and one place to begin with, and once started how could another happen close by? wouldn't they be fighting for the gas gravitationally?
