ARRANGER'S WORDS :: CREEP TO THIS! ^^ EXO's songs are always a great challenge to remix. That's because of the great quality in the vocals carefully crafted by the songwriters, SM's masterminds and of course the boys extraordinary performance. It's also because as a musician I feel the world has the eyes on me more than other remixes. Most kpop fans start from the famous groups such as EXO and if a new kpop fan has just discovered remixes I want to make sure they stay in the game.

The original song was of course absolutely gorgeous. Powerful vocals that pierce through you accompanied by a strong tribal rhythm all running at 75/150bpm. Nothing wrong there, nothing to "fix" really but well Areia Remix is not about "fixing, it's about exploring and discovering new ways to enjoy those blessed little treats we call Kpop. If you go through the lyrics of the song you will soon discover the boys are quite aggressive and confident with their point thus the rhythm-heavy monotonic verses of the original. That's done perfectly so the only way I felt worth exploring is a more melodic one. One that lets you completely sink into this dream. See a much deeper and fluid side of their story. Like the original is the reality and this is the dream they had while dozing off exhausted in their van after the MV shooting or their live performances. Like throwing this machine that was perfectly manufactured in a sky-tall city into the crystal clear Mediterranean sea and the water finds its way through the mechanisms.

In order to guarantee consistence and meaningful connection between the music and the lyrics, I have experimented a lot with the progression. It's very easy to go into strange territories and get completely lost when going melodic, creating "monstrous" awkward versions that are completely unrelated to the original meaning of the song. I explored quite a few of those myself while making this. This "bigger-than-life" progression and set of sounds seem to help creating that dream world that allows re-telling the story from a deeper perspective.

Technically speaking, except than adding an actual chord progression during the verses (the original is straight Fm throughout), I'm playing with your emotions by a single change: instead of the expected Fm as the first chord at the drop I raise up to the 4th of the key (A#m) which carries higher notes and therefore higher energy. When all that energy is suddenly released at once by a melodic jump (as opposed to let's say a heavy beat), it makes you feel like "taken away some other place".

Thank you always for enjoying my works. Each remix I do, I cut a piece of me and sacrifice it to the altar of kpop. Lately I have been exploring different ways to arrange music, ways that promote fast prototyping and favour creativity instead of dwelling on the audio engineering. Besides, and that's the most important detail here, this is not about me proving myself as a musician or audio engineer. Although there are quite a lot of my works out there to judge it, nobody really cares about that except perhaps other musician and audio engineer nerds like me. The most of you guys just want remixes of your favourite kpop songs. More of them. Better and Better. That's what Areia Remix has always been about, not some fancy tech or skill show-off.

After getting involved in cinematography I found out that good image is barely about the camera and the lens, it's all about what's in front of them. It's what it illuminates those subjects. It's what they do. It's how the camera moves and how the editing helps telling a story. In a similar way, what's the point of a super fined tuned sound if it doesn't play beautiful melodies and progressions? Although after 200+ remixes many things happen on auto-pilot because experience automatically kicks in, I literally put my soul in it. I have created the arranger mindset, the kpop remixing brain module - which I load every time I sit down in this chair. It completely overwhelms every other brain activity. It's like a large city with billions of connections all co-operating in harmony. All of that is so I click at the right places in the most efficient way that result into interesting and good sounding arrangements. It exhausts me both physically and mentally but this piece of music comes out and then I can go to bed and say I've done something today, I left my footprint in this world, I've been places. So here you get your little treat and we can all move on. To the next remix. [JUN]

I really love this, because it has this melodic tune to it. Monster can be both, hard bass or a soft melodic sound. Since the original was more based on the "funky" beat, I really wanted a soft remix of Monster too. This definitely is a blessing for me. Thank you Areia. <3

It took me a while to "get used to", because it's so different from the original, but then around the rap part I was really feeling it, this is amazing!
