In my traveling years I have been to Gobekli Tepe, see the Sutton Hoo helmet, visited Machu Picchu, been to the Dead Sea Museum in Jerusalem, went to the Valley of the Kings to see Tut’s Tomb & traveled to Xian to see the Buried Army. I went to Louis & Mary’s Leakey Olduvai Gorge. So much more to see & learn.

Note that the terracotta army is just the outer part of qin shi huang's tomb complex. They didn't even open his tomb because the stuff inside would deteriorate instantly (the terracotta army used to be fully colored but when they dug them and exposed the figures to air, the paint crumbled away so they now look bland). They recently dug into another area where they found his concubines who were executed to be buried along with him. Their clothes and jewels along with the neck injuries are still intact. The find is actually equivalent to discovering the tomb of alexander the great or genghis khan because of his significance to chinese history but we don't get to see the blings inside like king tut's tomb so it gets a meh from the general public.

I’ve stood in front of the Sutton Hoo mask in the British Museum. It’s an amazing piece of work and so enigmatic.

Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! I wonder if the cavemen (and women) were using the paintings to educate their younger generation in the past..

Spanish conquistadores didn’t deface Machu Picchu simply because they didn’t find it - by the time they came, Machu Picchu had already been long abandoned and its existence was already forgotten to most….Hiram Bingham discovered it by pure chance (he literally _stumbled across_ it), the city was thought to be a legend even by locals - who did have stories about a “city in the clouds”, but they believed it was a myth, a folk tale.

Top 3 (In my opinion):
1. The Terracotta Army
2. King Tut's tomb
3. The Dead Sea Scrolls
The Terracotta Army is the biggest discovery in the 20th century because it had an army of Chinese soldiers and knowing their history, they fight for their land and finding statues of them underground is extraordinary, not to mention, a bunch of farmers found them by accident, but it was worth the discovery.

No, the difference is grave robbers are thieves trying to make profit, and archaelogists seek knowledge.

I think the three most famous figures whose tombs remain missing that people still look for ( with varying amounts of effort ) are...

1 : Alexander the Great

2 : Genghis Khan

3 : Atilla the Hun

I think Alexander the Great's Tomb may likely be found in the future, because unlike the other two, there have been many, many, searches, and while unsuccessful, we have a general idea of where the Tomb may be ( in or around Alexandria, Egypt )

It just hasn't been found yet, or it may have been destroyed, I believe the most recent record of the Tomb's existence was when it was visited by the Roman Emperor Caracalla, who visited the Tomb in 215...

The most recent claim to have seen the Tomb is Leo Africanus ( Leo The Africa ) who lived from 1494 - 1554, but there is no evidence he had actually been to the tomb...
