Located in the Mediterranean Sea, Corsica is known as the "island of beauty". It's had a tumultuous relationship with the mainland since it became French in the 18th century and separatist sentiment still runs deep. In recent years, there has been growing momentum towards more autonomy for the island, but what would that mean for Corsicans? We take a closer look in this edition of French Connections.

When I visited, I was actually SHOCKED at all the Corse patriotism. They even had the flag on shopping bags!

Thanks for this reportage. Understatement to say France has a “tricky “ relationship with Corsica or any other “autre mers” départements. France would not have to pay “subsidies” to these islands if they had their “independence “, not “ autonomy “ to self governing without hands tied by the French pouvoir. Those subsidies are like rents France pays for geopolitical interests and control. France has ALWAYS made it murky for locals to be divided about independence when faced with the alternatives. Haiti and Madagascar were the last islands to gain independence and France has worked to assure their failure! The rest under France remain impoverished!

Mayotte and New Caledonia are also sick of France and looking toward independence. France is having financial issues, I hear, so this might be why they can't financially support these islands (not like they did before). But France wants them as assets of power because it doesn't have much power now.
