Wine Bottle Particle Accelerator

In one of the cooler moments of my life, I built a particle accelerator in a wine bottle.

It's basically a cathode ray tube - a potential of ~10kV was set up between two electrodes, at a vacuum on the order of milli-torr. As a result, electrons were ripped from the cathode at the top of the bottle, and accelerated to the anode halfway down the bottle. This sets up a plasma in the remaining atmosphere in the bottle, which is the glow you see. The video shows AC operation (~15 kV at ~15 kHz) as the vacuum pump is turned on, and the pressure decreases.

We called it GRAPE2, because physicists can't resist an acronym.

Happily, nothing imploded, and no-one was electrocuted in the making of this device. I strongly encourage you not to try this, unless you know the many ways doing this could kill or hurt you.

The best part about this? This was for an exam. I love what I do.
