One of the main reasons it's speculated that the French found it 'scandalous' wasn't necessarily because of the straps on the dress but rather because Madame Gautreau was from Louisana and wasn't from France.

I was wearing a dress with a spaghetti strap yesterday. It feel off my shoulder when I was driving and thought of this painting. I felt deliciously scandalous and then remembered it’s 2022 💀

I was lucky enough to see this painting when I was 17. I had never heard of the guy, and I was just kind of passing by quickly to get to the van Gogh paintings. People don’t realize that she is like 8 feet tall and raised, a titaness among puny men. She and Woman and Gold are the only two portraits of women I remember feeling the need to stop and take in probably ever.

Yes i’ve been thinking about this for a few weeks now!! i find it so weird that it was still considered scandalous with the straps in the correct place; another commenter said It was because she’s from Louisiana and not france and that kinda shook me.

I have the two versions of madam x printed and glued to my sketchbook. I love the story. A time when nsfw arts were everywhere people fighting over a piece of clothes which is like hiding an inch of the shoulder.
