Moğollar (sometimes known as Mogols) was one of the first prominent groups combining Turkish folk music with modern sounds. Several of the most prominent figures in Turkish music passed through the band, including Murat Ses and Cem Karaca. After a period of activity and innovation in the 70s, the group ceased activity, then resumed in the 90s.

" The adventure of Moğollar is that of young Turks, from Anatolia, who discover at the end of the 60s the pop and psychedelic wave that sweeps over Europe. The idea of ​​a new musical melting pot is not long in the minds of the four friends, all talented players of traditional instruments. Strangely, it’s in France that their first vinyl record came out in 1971, which is why they were renamed the passage under the French name of “Les Mogol” (reference to the great Muslim empire of the same name) . Other choices that are not really to the credit of the label, the opus is rewarded with an extended title - namely Dances and rhythms of Turkey from yesterday to today - and with his musicians in costume. So many clues that would make expect a pure folk album for tourists … which is absolutely not the case!

In fact, there is a convincing marriage between oriental folk and western psychedelic rock, where acoustic instrumentation and rock mix with happiness. On horseback between tradition and modernity, here is the famous mixture that is sometimes also called the term, a bit generic, “Anatolian rock”. Entirely instrumental , the compositions are mostly based on traditional tunes to which Moğollarbrings a current touch using piano, electric organ, guitar or electric bass. Of course, we find all the instrumental arsenal ethnic posted on the cover (iklig, baglama, darbuka, kasik) but the orientalizing aspect is quite moderate so as not to unbalance the whole. In the end, we will be happy to describe the progressive folk style but with a touch made in Turkey . "
