Man 87-89 would have been a good time for the USSR to hit NATO, a good time for NATO that is. NATO had quite a lot of its newest systems online and in numbers by that time. The M1A1, leo 2A4, Challenger 1, Marder 1A3 and Bradley M2A2, both with protection against the BMP-2s 30mm APDS rounds. The AH-64 and Black Hawk were both in service as well as newer marks of the F-15/16/18 and of course the F-117 came online in 1989. The Warsaw Pact would have been hard pressed to make significant progress against the combined forces of NATO in this period. All that said, man were the aesthetics of this time period cool, both sides militaries looked damn good. Even so I am glad the Cold War is over, especially since it ended in a NATO/Western "Victory" It really sucks that Cold War version 2.0 is now ongoing.
