My Brutally Honest Opinion On The Ascent...

Xbox's next exclusive is here and it is one I proudly championed on multiple podcasts on a game that looks truly special. While many of those expectations were fulfilled, The Ascent also get a lot wrong and left me a bit disappointed so far. Time will tell if this changes or not, but for now these are my thoughts so far on the newest day one Game Pass drop for Xbox.

Just wanted to pin a comment to emphasize this is not a final review of any sort and just impressions. I believe I made that abundantly clear, but given my lack of enthusiasm I can see how that would be lost in the conversation as I wanted to give impressions for Game Pass users. I don’t believe I ll be doing that anymore in the future given some of the feedback today. Happy to see many disagreeing and enjoying The Ascent! Hoping my opinion on it turns around.

It’s a slow start, but so far, I’m loving every bit of it. Solid twin stick shooter. Gorgeous, lived in world. Lots of tools to fine-tune your play style. Sharp writing. I can see an RPG enthusiast being disappointed, but as a fan of twin stick shooters, I could not be more impressed

The game is fantastic so far, lots more depth then most twin stick shooters, throw in some progression and upgradable guns and you got yourself a my type of game.

I'm about 4 hours in and I love every part of this game. I really don't see the negatives. Great graphics and art style, above average story, really fun combat and sweet rpg upgrade elements. I would definitely recommend 👌👍👍👍

Man I'm surprised to hear this reception! everything about this game has its hooks in me gameplay is super addictive. As far as the over leveled area, you went through a building that had those higher level enemies, you could just zip around it to get to the pizza place with the stash. No shade though! Everyone has their own perspective.

The game is absolutely awesome. I'm playing solo on a PC and I'm having a blast. The size of the city and the amount of detail is impressive. So much better than Cyberpunk...

I think that we've become so accustomed to gaming shortcuts (the easy mission exits in skyrim, for example) that when a game presents a plausibly realistic world we balk at the prospect of covering the same ground twice. But I'm finding that the more I walk this city, the more I get to know it, and the more I'm able to traverse it without issue. At the beginning of the game, you're just shlubs with no money and you have to walk back and forth down the same sewage lined passages, but it helps to get extra opportunities to explore side passages and find secrets. Ultimately, your character will get more wealthy, and the wealthy just call a cab. Seriously, the cab system IS the games fast travel. It's 1k a pop, but that's a small price to pay to cruise over the chumps below. :)

I'm absolutely loving this game. Pro tip, the side missions bring you to areas the main missions skip. That's where I was finding better weapons. I had no problem with difficult enemies. There's also a taxi system (press left on d pad when there's no action) and a train system.

The game has really clicked for me. Although I've played more than 5 hours so there's that.

This game is only made by 12 people I'm amazed how good it looks and plays ..its not a 10 but still fun.

I’ve put about 7 hours in coop with my friend. I thought it was great. It’s tough if you chose to take on challenge and the abilities are futuristic and fun. Can’t wait to play tomorrow when we are both free.

A quality review is more important than immediacy. I think if your considerate and patient enough to wait for a review it speaks to less impulsive and more informed purchasing.
