This animation summarizes the overall chemical process of photosynthesis. It is appropriate for middle school through college-level students.

Photosynthesis is a set of chemical reactions that converts light energy into chemical energy. When the photosystems absorb energy from light, they strip away the electrons from water molecules. These high-energy electrons are eventually transferred to the carbons in carbon dioxide molecules to make carbohydrates such as G3P (glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate). Producers use carbohydrates to produce other organic molecules, which help the producers grow, reproduce, and fuel cellular activities. An important byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen gas.
