The Straightedge: Turning Urban Lumber (Part 4)

Показать описание
Every day, in urban areas, trees are cut down for various reasons. These trees are a veritable treasure trove of lumber that can be reclaimed, as opposed to finding its way to the junk yard or fireplace. As well, many of the species of wood growing locally in your area may be otherwise unavailable from lumber suppliers. This episode covers the steps required to reclaim such wood for turning.

@123HURST I am quite happy with the Powermatic. Plenty of power and it can handle up to 20" diameter on the inboard, and if i aver want to go bigger, I can go 36" on the outboard.

This is good information that I learned, unfortunately, the hard way. Many of my blanks cracked because I did not prepare them properly. I can salvage most of these. I could have saved myself much of this problem if I had known this procedure five years ago.

i have that same chuck, but may i advise your to grind off the rounded end of the key. because it can slip if you tighten the chuck, and destroy one of the round tightening screws. great professional video's!

This series is far and away the best that I have found on YouTube. I recently had 5 red oak trees cut on my property and have been trying to figure out how best to cut and prepare the pieces. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!!

0:18  That's a great idea.  I haven't seen that in any of the thousands of bowlturning videos I have watched. If you had used a mortise, you wouldn't have this concern at 3:29.

At last a turner who lays it out clearly how to move from log to finished bowl in 6 months. Each step clear and in sequence. Thanks Brian. I have been a profesional woodworker for twenty years but have never turned. I have watched dozens of videos showing how to collect and use urban lumber but they ALL miss out one or two key steps. You didn't. Thanks again. I'm buying a chainsaw tomorow  and getting to work on the collected logs I have in the yard.

I watched all the videos in this series this morning. They answered several questions I had regarding the rough cutting of the blanks. I'm headed out to cut up some fresh cut walnut a friend gave me. Thanks for the info.

Brian. Thank you for the videos. I have learnt more in these four videos than all the others I watched put together. "Newbee" to turning bowls, etc. Again I like the Safety Aspects that you put on. Keep up the good work and may you have years of making "sawdust"!!!!

Brian, thanks for a great video series. I've just finished watching all four and can't begin to tell you how many questions you've answered for me. I really appreciate the knowledge and ideas you and some of the other experienced turners share. Thanks again.

Brian,
As usual a very well done and informative video.  I noticed that you quite often use a S shaped tool rest.  Do you find that better for bowl turning so there isn't so much of having to readjust  the tool rest?
