But do you know the reason the Sphinxes are facing inwards rather than outwards? Normally they face away from a monument to help protect it from evils and the like, but in the case of this obelisk, the ship it was being transported on sank in a storm killing all the crew and had to be recovered from the sea days later. It was eventually returned to the UK but was considered cursed due to the fate of the crew so the sphinxes were turned inwards to face the obelisk to protect the city of London from the obelisk itself.

It was "gifted" to the UK by the Egyptian colonial administration, ie, it was stolen

This obelisk is actually one of a pair that stood in ancient Egypt for millennia. The other one is standing in New York. They were transported to the 2 main financial centres of the free world by freemasons who use 2 pillars as one of their symbols, meant to represent the pillars of Solomon's temple in ancient Israel.

For everyone who doesn't understand why I say this is stolen and not actually a gift, I'll explain.

Short version: a popular imperial overlord is still an imperial overlord who has no claim to native artifacts.

Long version: Muhammad Ali pasha and viceroy of Egypt was an Armenian appointed by the Ottoman Empire to rule the subject nation of Egypt. I have a bit of an analogy for what him giving away Egyptian artifacts would be like. You live in an apartment building. The landlord owns several such buildings and appoints property managers over each one. You like your property manager. In fact he's pretty awesome. Can he walk into your apartment take old family heirlooms and "gift" them to someone else? Or would that be stealing?

Got to admire the need to point out that it was a 'gift' and not stolen. Not like 99% of British wealth from Africa and beyond of course.

Gift, my ass. Like all of the other 'gifts' that Egypt and many more countries request returned, but continue to either sit in UK museums or in dead Lizzie's crown. Best part is that one of their lot recently was found to have stolen artefacts from Iraq, but the media were losing their minds over the prospect of the thief actually being punished.

It was a gift, it remained in Egypt until one year before England INVADED egypt.

anything “gifted” before 1900 is a bit questionable.

Its twin is in NYC Central Park. Tuthmosis lll obelisk has been cleaned, patched up, and hopefully reinforced enough to survive for many more years. $500, 000 dollars were spent on this preservation. A miracle !!!

This is linked to the Royal family.. They originally came from Egypt and were cast out' because of their dark and evil ways. Modern day.. What's changed?
