As stated below, the yellow wedge thingies coming at you are extra ships. If you shoot one and it runs into you, it's a collision and bye-bye ship. From level 3 (?) onwards a "yellow chirper" (oval and makes noise) goes left to right. Your laser whip CAN shoo them, and they are worth points.

For some reason I prefer the Atari version more 🤔

I think the Atari version has better graphics and gameplay, it's more colorful and the grid has more depth.

Most of the times the Atari version is the original of an Activision game. But in this case the Intellivision version is the original version and the Atari version is the conversion.

I’ve always preferred the Atari 2600 version, although I haven’t played the intellivision version as much.

I love the2600 version but I don't think I ever played the intellivision version. There's a great port on the Atari xl/xe computers too. Is there a 5200 version? Maybe they are the same

Don't shoot the yellow things, they give you an extra ship.

Great comparison, Brian. I'm not sold on either really at this point. The Intellivision version looked a bit more fluid. Beamrider is on my shorr list of CIB Activision VCS games that I need for my set, and I'm shocked at how much it's been going for. Thanks for these comparisons!

Personally, I prefer the Atari 2600 version of a lot of games (except Pac-Man). There's something appealing and charming about the 2600's primitive graphics and sound effects that punch me right in the nostalgia balls. Even though other consoles might've had better graphics, sound and background music, the 2600 is just so iconic. It was the only console I owned from about 1983 to 1989.

Problem with the paddle is that it takes a lot more cycles to read, so you can't do as much in your game.

I used to play it on my MSX machine. Lot of fun indeed.

I always find it funny that Intellivision has the same exact font for all of it's text in every game. Not that it is a problem, just something I've always noticed.

Another sweet comparison/contrast video Brian! I have the Atari VCS/2600 Beamrider port via emulated game ROM. Haven't tried it yet. Need to find a copy of the IntelliVision Beamrider port. So far I think I have to give this one to the IntelliVision Beamrider port.

One thing I've noticed on a lot of Intellivision games (vs VCS games) is that the scrolling and animations are much choppier than the VCS even though the graphics overall look better. Playability is important, and you can see the choppiness on this one compared to the VCS which looks really smooth.

A 2nd fire button could be implemented on the Atari 2600 as the Omega Race Booster Grip demonstrates.
