In the centre of part 3 of Rohmer's "4 Seasons-Cycle" stands a young man, Gaspard, who went to Dinard (a town by the sea in the Bretagne) because he hopes to meet the girl he thinks he is in love with - Lena. Shortly after his arrival he comes into contact with Margot who works as a servant at her aunt's creperie. He spends a long time with her, and discusses the way he feels about Lena but he hesitates to tell the truth about his relationship. The reason is that he isn't quite sure himself. Although he insists he loves Lena, doubts arise...

This, like most of Rohmer’s output, is a masterpiece. Perfect use of setting; limited, but wonderful use of music (in this case, more than in most of his films); and wholly believable characters. What I like about Rohmer is that, quite often, he can have rather unsympathetic leads, characters you wouldn’t necessarily automatically warm to (think the precious, needy, and frankly often irritating Delphine in _The Green Ray, _ for example); in this case a rather dithering, self-obsessed boy on the make, but, somehow, he makes you care for them all, no matter what their foibles and peccadilloes. The level of detail is incredible. I watched this film for about the 50th time recently, (yes, I need to get out more, and yes, I do watch other stuff) and for the first time I clocked a poster on Gaspard’s wall in his holiday digs in Dinard: the subject matter? A _Definitely, Maybe_ Oasis album poster from 1994, two years before the movie was distributed. ‘Definitely, Maybe’: a quite perfect, succinct two-word motto summing up the whole film and Gaspard’s predicament! 🍿

This is the movie that got me started on Rohmer. Now I've seen every Rohmer. It's like listening to the Beatles. I know every Beatles song by hard. But now, there is no Beatles, and no Rohmer :(
