Magnitsky List: White House announces sanctions against Russian officials

The White House has defended its decision to send to Congress a list of alleged human rights abusers in Russia involved in the death of Russian whistleblower Sergei Magnitsky. The list contains the names of over a dozen people reportedly involved in the Magnitsky case. Magnitsky died in 2009 while in prison. He was arrested on tax fraud charges after leveling similar accusations against Russian state officials in 2008. Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that Magnitsky died of heart failure, but there are suspicions that he was beaten to death.
