These great Americans are overshadowed by other wars.
Thank you for your service, Marine.

My dad was a proud Marine who served in Korea. He would never talk about it. The only thing he ever told me was that he was there for 22 months, he got one shower in November and it was ice cold. You'd wake up in the morning and your boots were frozen to the ground. God bless the Marines.

One of my co workers was there. Turned out he had been a Navy Corpsman who because of his tall build carried a BAR too on the long walk out.

He was awarded a silver star. When asked for what he said, "In all honesty I really don't remember, the only thing I remember ( this a man raised in North Dakota ) it was COLD. It was F***ing cold!"

The only time any of us at work had ever heard him use foul language

That battle deserves a movie. Read "Breakout" by Martin Russ. Much of the info was suppressed by MacArthur and the Army.

My uncle Ramón was a Marine and died fighting in Korea.

I was told he was a great guy.

My grandfather received the telegram the day he was going to see the father of my uncle's fiancé to discuss the plans for the wedding upon his return.

I wish I had met him. 🙏

My great grandfather William "Preacher" Abbot, a US Army signal man, found himself riddled with grenade shrapnel, shot several times, and captured by the NK at the Chosin. He had to crawl on his hands and knees for weeks to go camp to camp until he managed to make it to the Yalu River POW Camp (Camp 7 I believe) where a sympathetic Chinese officer who went to college in the states helped him receive much-needed medical attention which was denied by the NK. He survived in the POW camp for the duration of the war. Upon being sent to the POW exchange, he found out the army labeled him KIA as his tags were found on a disfigured body, later labeled MIA-POW as a rescued soldier confirmed he was alive but didn't know where he was.
After weeks of waiting for his name to be called by a clerk who was told he was dead, he got "fed up with the bullspit" and assumed the name of someone else in order to return home. He passed away in 2016 due to an infection in his lungs that formed when he was fed moldy rice in the NK camps and went untreated by the Chinese and later the VA until it was too late. His name can be found under all 3 categories at the Korean War Memorial in DC.

Thank you very much for your service sir. And I’m sorry for how we’ve screwed up this country even after you fought for our freedoms. God bless you.

The man crossed his arms in the beginning just speaking about the cold, ill bet he felt cold just thinking about it. My great grandfather from ww2 slept with a heater in his room every night even on warm nights, he'd tell me "I've suffered enough cold for your grandchildren I'll never be cold again"

Amazing people. I served with an old Sgt who served at Chosin .

He spoke seldomly about it, except for lessons. He taught me many old tricks and fixes.

I spent the rest of my career useing and passing on his knowledge.

Thank God, you survived those horrible conditions my dad never spoke with his service service time in Korea. He joined the Marines at 17. it breaks my heart and makes me nauseous to think he went through that. I truly appreciate your sacrifice to this country. God bless you.
