Whoever this interviewer was, give her a raise. This is how you interview a politician. Just ask the question and let them answer it. You don't have to debate them. You don't have to try and trap them or trick them. Just ask a straight question and let the person answer. Their ability to answer is going to make or break the public's impression of them, not the reporter's question. Whatever you think of Trump, you got to hear what he thinks fairly and in his own words. The public was well served by that. They can make up their own minds about it.
