Land speed cars at Goodwood 2013

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed Mark Chapman, chief engineer on the Bloodhound land speed record attempt, takes Andrew English on a tour of the cars which have previously competed for the record.

An exhibition of land speed cars is currently being held at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, in West Sussex.

Mark Chapman, chief engineer on the Bloodhound project, described the evolution of land speed cars through the decades.

"The fantastic difference moving from wheel driven to the thrust cars, is that you have this opportunity to make them very, very small," Mr Chapmen explained.

Speaking about the stream lined Blue Flame rocket propelled car, Mr Chapman said:

"The issue with thrust cars is that they accelerate very slowly, so actually to get the rocket working ... it had to be pushed to 150 miles per hour."

The Bloodhound land speed record attempt, hopes to achieve 1000 miles per hour with one of its cars in summer 2015, in South Africa.
