Helicopter Tested to Destruction

Показать описание
A Chinook Helicopter is ground resonance tested.

Ground resonance is an imbalance in the rotation of a helicopter rotor when the blades become bunched up on one side of their rotational plane and cause an oscillation in phase with the frequency of the rocking of the helicopter on its landing gear.

The result is DESTRUCTION of the Helicopter.

Chinook who survived RPGs, bullets, survived the war and proved its loyalty, looking forward to a peaceful farewell, but

i'm amazed the front rotor blades escaped relatively unharmed.

Expensive test to find cause of even more expensive problem, check.
It's only an expensive test if you don't learn anything from it.

I think I may actually know the story behind this video. I had a prof when I was studying aeronautical engineering at RMC who showed us this clip and told us that the RCAF was actually testing a new radar and they never intended for this to happen. They took the landing gear off and tied it down and then started the rotor blades so the radar would have something to read. They were apparently shocked when the aircraft ripped itself apart after less than a minute and my prof was one of the people charged with doing the work to figure out why it happened. Granted, I could be mistaken and this may be an entirely different instance of this occurring. It's cool as hell, either way.

By the video it looks like everyone in that helicopter would have been relatively ok. None of the blades even seemed to make contact with the fuselage until they came to a stop. There was no subsequent fire or other emergency that could injure the crew.

If the blades had smashed into the side of the helicopter while they while still spinning that would be a far worse scenario.

This is what happens when you put magic mushrooms in the fuel system.

WTF!!!! I went in one of those in our forces family days. My son is in the RAF It was amazing. But watching this might have put me off if I'd seen it before hand. Hahaha. But it was truly astounding to be in. And the RAF chaps are fantastic.

Supports the idea helos are always trying to fly apart.

The way to fix this is you bring blades towards each other wher etey become centralized and making a centrla break mode it will re ociliate it int osinq, or you can use a gear drive weight where it can never be out of sync or it can't fly... kind o like how a gun and prop works on ap lane.. in ww2.

If they're not going to use it, why destroy it? What a waste!
