Ma'am... let me correct you. Value of a static variable can be changed through non-static method. In your 2nd example if you write - dept="Engg"; in method display(), you will get a different value for a static variable 'dept'. The main purpose behind using static variables is unlike instance or local variables; Static variables & their values are shared by different instances of a class.
