✅The Dark L vs. The Light L — how to pronounce them

Can you hear the difference between the dark L and the light L?? I actually like thinking of these sounds as a front L vs. a back L… if you think about it in terms of placement—like where the sound is made—that might make it easier for you.

Also, hot tip 🔥you don’t always have to bring the tip of your tongue up for the dark L. For example, when I say MILK, I can say it correctly without lifting the tip of my tongue to touch behind my teeth. Try that and let me know how it goes 💪🏼

BONUS TIP: Do NOT pronounce the L at all in walk, talk, could, should, or would— IT’S SILENT!! 🤫

For me, a Polish person, light L is like Polish L and dark L is like Russian L ;) hehe I heard the difference long before I knew the names for these sounds :D

Dark L ➡️ ol at the end of a word.
Light L ➡️ la la lalala at the beginning of a word or syllabel.
Thanks Miss Steffani 👍

Yes, yes it's all great but can anyone tell me why do we call it light/dark in the first place

Hi, I've noticed that SOMETIMES people pronounce the dark L as a light L when the following word starts with a vowel.

For example:
Pull out
"/pʊl/ /aʊt/" becomes "/'pʊlaʊt/" with a light L.

Call her
"/kɔl/ /hər/" becomes "/kɔlər/" with a light L and dropping the H.

So I'm wondering, does it sound informal or is it just a personal preference?
Thanks~

Now I understand why some British people I know pronounce "feel" and "milk" as "feew" and "miwk"; it's not their laziness or inability, it's just how it works 😂

OMG I used to pronounce 'feel' like the L in 'leaf'..Now I guess that was very wrong!!!

I don't really hear the difference. Just another made up thing in English.
