You can really read with any Tarot deck even if the symbolism is totally different aslong as it is touching you on some level. For the RW you sure should know the symbolism (same for the Thoth) but it is really helpful to have so many decks nowadays where this is not needed but still can look up the traditional meanings to help you along.

I've started using playing cards more. I think you can use anything that has symbols that work for you.

Very knowledgeable, ethical and professional couple, the Leitch Family. Aaron was my teacher and I look forward to learn more from him in the future. Alexander is such a great interviewer too.

What a great podcast. I've been dabbling in tarot for many years now after being given the Thoth Tarot deck when I was 16. Now, I'm studying it more deeply, in conjunction with the Qabalah. My self doubt and lack of self belief has held me back up for too long, but after listening to Carrie and her advice, I feel more confident and willing to take chances. Thanks so much to you both and I've subscribed to the Doc Solomon channel and look forward to watching the videos. X

Hm... while I do agree that a lot of the symbolism in traditional Tarot forms is valuable, I'm not sure if I can entirely agree with the notion that it's better than, say, a Lord of the Rings deck. Like she said, Tarot originated as a card game. Even the Rider-Waite deck made a lot of changes. Like money, we ascribe our own meaning to it, and so it's been adapted to fit a specific system, one of many.

Going back to LOTR... I'm unfamiliar with the deck, but I am familiar with the books, and I could argue that Merry and Pippin actually are well-suited for the Fool. Stealing pumpkins (I assume from Farmer Maggot) shows a similar haphazard wandering nature to the Fool's traditional nigh-walk off a cliff. The Hobbits themselves may represent the bag of secrets, in their own hidden potential for greatness that comes later, ultimately playing large parts in the war against Sauron.

Upon reflection, I'd probably find more meaning with that deck than, say, any connections between Rider-Waite and the Sefirot, because my field of knowledge is more in Tolkien than the Kabbalah. So I suppose it ultimately does come down to what suits someone the best.
