How to Install a Doggie Door in a Metal Door

I needed to install two doggie doors, one from the house to the garage and the other from the garage to outside. Both doors were metal. I installed the first door and discovered how to do it. This video shows how I installed the doggie door in the metal door from my kitchen to the garage.

This instructional video was made specifically for this product, but it's highly likely that the installation is similar to most brands.

Thanks, Dan! If you had put blue painter's tape on the door outside of where you cut the hole, you could have avoided scratching the door with the jig saw.

Thanks you Dan! Your video helped this single mom install the exact same pet door on what looks to be the same metal door (with decorative panels;)! I opted to center the pet door cuz I'm neurotic, and used blocker backing to caulk the deeper decorative panel gaps. I couldn't find a jigsaw bit short enough to deter hitting the opposite side of my 2" thick door, so that side of the door ended up with a bit messier cut like yours due to the jigsaw bit frequently hitting the metal panel from the the inside while cutting that side of the door first (figured it's the side of the door I see most so I wanted that side to have the cleanest possible cut). Thank you so much for your video and the extra confidence it gave me to accomplish this pet door install in my metal door!!

Heads Up! Keep in mind if you're installing a pet door within a door leading to the garage, you will ruin the 1-hour fire rating of the door. When you go to sell your home, the Buyer's inspector will call it out. The remedy at that point is the installation of a new door.

You also could've measured from the edge of the inside of the door(where the hinges are) to each corner of your drawn out square. That way you dont have to rely on if you were straight when drilling the holes. I hope that all made sense.

great video thank you....but if I use a longer blade on the jigsaw would that prevent me from having to do a flip side as you did?? Meaning, just one cut all the way through??

Nice video Dan -- doing a renovation on a cabin / home office in my backyard and the built-in pet door steel doors I'm looking at have a 8-12 week delay. I think this will do the trick.

Since the door has paneled design on one side, the pet door would look better if centered!
