In Fallout Tactics, random map encounters like this had a really fun glitch attached. The first time you encounter any of them, open up your inventory and drop everything you have that's worth good money (power armor, miniguns, stimpacks, actual cash, etc). Now leave the screen and come back to collect your gear. If you leave again and come back, the gear you dropped will still be there when you pick it up. Do it again, same result. Before long you'll have a dozen different places to pick up ammo and stimpacks whenever you need them plus gear to sell or equip to new characters that you find.

Fun fact in fallout 3 after beating the game and going back to vault 101 you get a vault tec distress signal and you have a chance of persuading the overseer to step down and Amata says the exact line the overseer said to the vault dweller the “I’m sorry your a hero and you have to leave”
